SchoolNet Nigeria in collaboration with Microsoft Nigeria, held the 3rd Annual Microsoft Innovative Education Forum at Chelsea Hotel, Abuja on June 14 – 15, 2010.
The event which had several dignitaries and stakeholders in education in attendance from across the country was declared open by the Mr. Oni Ononye, Public Sector Lead, Anglophone West Africa, Microsoft.
The two-day event started with a pre-event workshop on Monday June 14, 2010. The workshop was to equip teachers with new technologies and approaches that could be integrated into their classroom instruction. The workshop sessions covered the Microsoft live@edu, use of mouse mischief, and innovative teaching. The participants were challenged to further harness the benefits of the new knowledge gained during the workshop by implementing lessons learned in their respective schools. While the workshop was on-going, the finalists for the competition were grouped into three teams for a field tour. The outcome was to develop learning activities from the various places that were visited.
The second day of the event witnessed many activities which includes a presentation session in the morning and the Gala Dinner Night Award Ceremony. The finalists presented their projects to the panel of judges drawn from different background in Education. This was followed by project sharing and peer review session and finally the teams’ presentations.
The award night witnesses the presence of many dignitaries amongst are Mr. Oni Ononye (Public Sector Lead, Anglophone West Africa, Microsoft), Hajia Jummai Umar-Ajijola (Citizenship Lead, Anglophone West Africa, Microsoft), Mrs. Ronke Bello (Deputy National Coordinator, SchoolNet Nigeria), Dr. Jimson Olufuye (President, ITAN and Vice Chairman, WITSA), Mr. Flynn Edward (Public Affairs Department , U. S. Embassy, Abuja). Mr. Manny Emecheta (Director, BIITC), Dr. Grace Ajagun (NERDC), Dr. Akin Fapohunda (Director, Aflon), Mr. Segun Fayose (Manager, Corporate Affairs and Communication, Multichoice Nigeria), Mrs. Rosemary Umana (Director, Inspectorate FCT Education Secretariat), Mrs. Atim Uwah (CIC, Enugu), Abuja), Mr. U. M. Ndu (rep. of Director Basic and Secondary Education, FME), and several others.
Some of the participants were given the opportunity to showcase their work briefly to the guests and there was an awesome cultural dance by the Black Culture Theatre. The winners were announced and the best three participants, best team and best teacher carted away several prizes ranging from Laptops, Video Camcorder, Printers, Cameras, External Hard disk etc. Consolation prizes were given to encourage other participating teachers.
The Best three teachers are:
First position: Mr. Nwodo Monday Obinna – Odogbolu Grammar School, Odogbolu, Ogun State
Second position: Mr. Bitrus-Pam Davou – School for the Gifted, Gwagwalada, Abuja
Third position: Mr. Elijah Adewale Ebunoluwa – Government Science Secondary School, Pyakasa, Abuja
Overall Best Teacher:
Mrs. Obiakor Vera Ada – Government Secondary School, Bwari, Abuja
Best Team:
Obiakor Vera Ada, Ogunwa Aderounbi, Ozoekwe Celina, Adeleke Michael and Elijah Adewale.
It was a memorable event. The best three teachers and the overall best teacher would be representing the country at the Pan Africa Innovative Education Forum slated for August 24 – 27, 2010 in Kenya.
